What is a smt connector?

The smt connector is a kind of part that electronic engineers and technicians often come into contact with. Its role is very simple, that is, if the circuit is blocked or isolated between the circuit, set up a bridge of communication so that the current flows so that the circuit achieves the intended function.

The connector is an indispensable part of electronic equipment, along the current flow path observation, you will always find one or more connectors. Connector form and structure are ever-changing, with the application of objects, frequency, power, application environment, etc., there are a variety of different forms of connectors.

For example, the connector used to light a lamp at the ballpark is very different from the connector used to light a hard disk drive, or the connector used to light a rocket. However, regardless of the type of connector, it is necessary to ensure the smooth, continuous, and reliable flow of current.

In general terms, the connector is not limited to current, in the rapid development of optoelectronics technology today, fiber optic systems, the carrier of the signal is light, glass, and plastic instead of ordinary circuits in the wire, but the optical signal path also use the connector, their role, and the circuit connector the same.

Here we are only concerned about circuit connectors, focusing on circuit connectors and their applications.

Why use connectors?

Imagine if there is no connector. How will it be? This time between the circuit to use a continuous conductor permanently connected, such as electronic devices to be connected to the power supply, must be connected to the ends of the wire, and electronic devices and power supply through some method (eg, welding) fixed firmly. This way, both for production and use has brought a lot of inconveniences.

Take an automobile battery as an example. Assuming that the battery cables are fixed and welded to the battery, the automobile manufacturer will have to increase the workload for the installation of the battery, which will increase the production time and cost. Battery damage needs to be replaced, but also to send the car to the repair station, desoldering removal of the old, and then welding on the new, for which to pay more labor costs.

With the connector can eliminate a lot of trouble, buy a new battery from the store, disconnect the connector, remove the old battery, install the new battery, and reconnect the connector.

This simple example illustrates the benefits of connectors. It makes the design and production process easier and more flexible, reducing production and maintenance costs.

The application of the connector

a. Computers and computer peripherals

This includes smt connectors used in mainframe computers, minicomputers, and personal computers, as well as related equipment such as printers, modems, scanners, and huge external storage devices.

b. Data Communications/Telecommunications

This includes connectors used in data communications, telephones, wireless radio, television broadcasting equipment, etc. Connectors for cable systems and fiber optic systems.

c. Consumer Electronic Equipment

Includes electronic equipment such as televisions, VCRs, stereos, and CD-ROMs. Electronic equipment such as video recorders and digital cameras.

d. Automotive electrical and electronic equipment

Cars, trucks, and other motor vehicles. Many smt connectors are used, from safety devices and driver's operating systems to body electrical wiring systems, automobile engines, and transmission control systems.

e. Other

Aircraft, ships, military equipment, and so on.

The composition of the connector

Connector by the plastic (insulator), terminals (conductor), and ancillary parts (iron shell, fork blade, screws, etc.). Plastic commonly used materials: NY6T, NY9T, PBT, LCP, PPS, PVC, POM, etc. Terminals commonly used materials: brass, bronze, phosphor bronze, and beryllium copper.

The basic function of the SMT connector is to conduct electricity, but a good connector performance not only electrical characteristics, mechanical properties, and chemical properties should be in line with the requirements of the end product. But also to facilitate the production and installation and consumer use.
