With the development of SMT chip technology towards miniaturisation and high efficiency, all kinds of commonly used components are getting smaller and smaller. Commonly used SMD resistors, SMD inductors and SMD capacitors become difficult to distinguish in appearance. So how to quickly distinguish the commonly used SMT SMD parts? Below is the introduction of the quick differentiation method.

1.Distinguish between SMD inductors and SMD capacitors.

Look at the colour (black) - Generally black are SMD inductors. Only Tantalum Tantalum capacitors used in precision equipment are black in colour, other ordinary chip capacitors are not black in colour.

Look at the model number - Chip inductors start with L, chip capacitors start with C. From the shape of a round initial judgement should be an inductor, measure the resistance of the two ends of the zero-point a few ohms, then it is an inductor.

Inspection - Chip inductors generally have small resistance, and there is no ‘charging and discharging’ to trigger the multimeter needle back and forth deflection phenomenon. Chip capacitors have the charging and discharging phenomenon.

Look at the internal structure - find the same parts can be cut open to look at the internal structure of the parts, with a coil structure of the chip inductor.

2.Distinguish between Chip Inductors and Chip Resistors

Judge by the shape - Inductors have multiple shapes, while resistors are basically rectangular in shape. When the shape of the part to be distinguished has a polygonal shape, especially a round shape,it is generally recognised as an inductor.

Measurement of resistance values - Inductors have smaller resistance values, while resistors have larger resistance values.

3.Distinguish between Chip Capacitor and Chip Resistor

Look at the colour - Chip capacitors are mostly grey, greenish grey, yellow, usually lighter yellow than the cardboard case. Some SMD capacitors are not printed on the surface, mainly because they are sintered at high temperature, which makes it impossible to print on the surface.

Look at the symbols - The symbol for chip capacitor in the circuit is ‘C’, and the symbol for chip resistor is ‘R’.

Measurement-Generally,the resistance value of a chip capacitor is very large, while that of a chip resistor is relatively small.Chip capacitors have charging and discharging phenomena, while chip resistors do not.

Audemars Piguet's electronic component sourcing team has entered into agreements with many of the world's largest electronic component manufacturers, which allows us to achieve high volume purchasing of products and reduce purchasing costs for our customers. We can provide customers with component procurement services. The SMD components we purchase will undergo strict IQC incoming material inspection to check the quality of the purchased components.
