    Product Description Technical Information

RO3003G2 high-frequency PCB material can be used for millimeter wave radar.

Rogers RO3003G2 high-frequency ceramic filled PTFE laminate is an extension of Rogers' industry-leading RO3003 solution. RO3003G2 laminated board is based on industry feedback and specifically meets the next-generation requirements of millimeter wave automotive radar circuit board Radar PCB applications.

The RO3003G2 laminate combines optimized resin and filler content to provide lower insertion loss, making it ideal for ADAS systems such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and active braking or lane change assistance.

Advantages of 77GHz frequency band in automotive and industrial applications

Advantage 1: High ranging resolution and accuracy

Compared with the ISM frequency band with only 200MHz broadband in the 24GHz frequency band, the SRR frequency band in the 77GHz frequency band can provide up to 4GHz scanning bandwidth, significantly improving distance resolution and accuracy. Among them, distance resolution represents the ability of radar sensors to separate two adjacent objects, and distance accuracy represents the accuracy of measuring a single target.

Due to the inverse ratio of distance resolution and accuracy to scanning broadband, the performance of 77GHz radar sensors is superior to 24GHz radar, which is 20 times higher than 24GHz radar. In fact, the distance resolution of 77GHz radar is 4cm (the resolution of 24GHz radar is 75cm).

High distance resolution can better separate objects (such as people standing near cars) and provide dense points for object detection, thereby improving environmental modeling and object classification, which is crucial for the development of advanced driving assistance algorithms and autonomous driving functions

In addition, the higher the resolution, the smaller the minimum distance recognized by the sensor. Therefore, the 77-81GHz radar has significant advantages in applications that require high precision, such as parking assistance.

The 77GHz broadband has high resolution and can be used for industrial liquid level sensors, allowing the sensor to "measure the last drop" of liquid level - minimizing the dead zone at the bottom of the water tank, as shown in the figure. Moreover, due to the high resolution, the minimum measurement distance can be increased, and the sensor can measure the liquid level at the top of the water tank when it is full.

Advantage 2: High resolution and accuracy

The speed resolution and accuracy are inversely proportional to the radio frequency (RF) frequency. Therefore, the higher the frequency, the better the resolution and accuracy. Compared to 24 GHz sensors, 77 GHz sensors can reduce power consumption.

For parking assistance applications, speed resolution and accuracy are crucial as parking requires accurate operation of the vehicle at low speeds. Figure 4 shows a representative FFT distance velocity image of a point object at 1 meter and depicts the improved resolution of the two-dimensional image obtained using 77 GHz.

In addition, recent research has further improved pedestrian detection and advanced object classification algorithms by using radar with higher resolution and micro Doppler signals. The improvement of speed measurement accuracy is beneficial for industrial applications and also for improving the current situation of traffic detection in the context of autonomous driving vehicles.

    Advantage 3: Smaller volume

One of the main advantages of higher RF frequencies is that the sensor size can be smaller. For the same antenna field of view and gain, the size of the 77GHz antenna array can be reduced by about three times in the X and Y dimensions. This size reduction is very useful in cars, mainly reflected in applications around the car (including doors and trunk that require the installation of proximity sensors) and in cars.

In industrial fluid horizontal line sensing, higher RF frequencies can provide narrower beams for antennas and sensors of the same size. Narrow beam can reduce unnecessary reflections on the side of the tank and interference from other obstacles inside the tank, thus obtaining more accurate measurement results. In addition, for the same beam width, the higher the RF frequency, the smaller the size of the sensor and the easier it is to install.
