WiFi module, belongs to the Internet of Things transport layer. Its function is to convert serial or TTL levels into embedded modules that comply with WiFi wireless network communication standards. It has built-in wireless network protocol IEEE802.11b. g.n protocol stack and TCP/IP protocol stack. The traditional hardware device embedded in the WiFi module can directly use WiFi to connect to the Internet. It is an important part of the Internet of Things applications such as wireless smart home, M2M, and is an important part of intelligent hardware.
WiFi module can be divided into three categories:
1. Universal WiFi modules, such as USB or SDIO interface modules on mobile phones, laptops, and tablets. The WiFi protocol stack and drivers run on Android, Windows, and IOS systems, requiring a very powerful CPU to complete applications;
2. Router solution WiFi module, typically a home router, with protocols and drivers using chips with powerful Flash and Ram resources and Linux operating system;
3. Embedded WiFi module, 32-bit microcontroller, built-in WiFi driver and protocol, interface for general MCU interfaces such as UART. Suitable for various smart homes or smart hardware products.
The WiFi module has two working modes
1. Active serial port device networking:
Active serial port device networking refers to the way in which devices initiate connections and exchange data (upload or download) with backend servers. Typical active devices, such as wireless POS machines, start connecting to the backend server and uploading transaction data after each card swipe transaction is completed. Among them, the backend server serves as the TCP Server end, and devices access the network through wireless APs/routers, acting as the TCP Client end.
2. Passive serial port device networking:
Passive serial port device networking refers to the situation where all devices in a system remain in a passive waiting state for connection, with only the backend server actively initiating connections with the devices and making requests or downloading data. Typical applications, such as certain wireless sensor networks, require each sensor terminal to continuously collect data in real-time. However, the collected data is not immediately uploaded but temporarily stored in the device. The backend server periodically connects to the device and requests to upload or download data at regular intervals.
